Château de La Chaize : The French Garden

The French Garden spreads out beneath the castle's terrace and was restored thanks to the design appearing on a naive XIIth C. painting of the castle. So was the Vegetable Garden laid on the South side. As a partition between both gardens a long slope runs all the way down and is planted with a festoon-pattern mix of perennials. It is topped by a high arcade-shaped hornbeam hedge recalling the structure of the stone arcades on the upper terrace. The Vegetable Garden also offers a typical French XVIIth C. pattern: 72 rays leave from the central basin and are planted with fruit-trees, flowers and vegetables mingled together.

On one side, a beautiful rose-garden was set with 220 bushes and 15 varieties. The Gardens are visited on appointment from June to September. Château de La Chaize is part of the "Rendez-vous aux Jardins" organized by the French Ministry for Culture and Communication, and opens its Gardens to the public the first week-end in June.
